ADDITION BASICS

The answer to an addition question is called the SUM.

Addition can be done from side to side or up and down.

When we have to add larger numbers or more than 2 numbers, it is best to use the vertical "up and down" arrangement so we can line up the place value columns. We start by adding the 1's column. If the sum is greater than 10, we CARRY or REGROUP in the 10's column.

Examples

Rewrite these addition questions in "up and down" form, then find the sums:

a) 7 + 9 =

b) 3 + 8 + 7 =

c) 6 + 7 =

d) 18 + 5 =

For more instruction on carrying, see the addition/subtraction primer in the primers section of the Primary MathRoom index.

Now get a pencil, an eraser and a note book, copy the questions,
do the practice exercise(s), then check your work with the solutions.
If you get stuck, review the examples in the lesson, then try again.
